How to install BlackHole on Mac

On macOS, the recommended free virtual audio cable is BlackHole. It creates an audio device that Langless uses to send your translated voice into the meeting. The install is quick and done only once. Here’s how to set it up on your Mac.

Open Langless

Before you start

You’ll need a Mac and a Chromium browser (Chrome or Edge) for Langless’s Meeting mode. If you don’t yet know what the cable is for, read virtual audio cable: what it is. (On Windows, the equivalent is VB-CABLE.)

Step-by-step installation

  1. Download BlackHole from the developer’s official site, existential.audio (or search "BlackHole audio driver" on GitHub: github.com/ExistentialAudio/BlackHole). The 2ch (2-channel) version covers most cases.
  2. Run the installer and follow the steps. macOS may ask for your password to authorize installing the driver.
  3. If a notice appears in System Settings → Privacy & Security, click "Allow" to authorize the developer’s software.
  4. Once installed, BlackHole 2ch appears as a system audio device.

Route the audio with Langless

With BlackHole installed:

  1. In Langless, in Meeting mode, choose BlackHole 2ch as the output device (where your translated voice goes out).
  2. In the meeting app (Zoom, Teams, Meet), in the audio settings, choose BlackHole 2ch as the microphone.
  3. Use headphones to avoid echo.

Tip: if you want to hear the meeting audio and still send it to Langless, the macOS Audio MIDI Setup app lets you create an "Aggregate Device" or "Multi-Output Device". Langless guides this on screen when needed.

How much it costs

BlackHole is free and open source. The Langless costs are the subscription (from US$ 25/month) and the translation minutes on your AI key (BYOK), from ~US$ 0.03/min directly to the provider.
