How to get an AI API key (OpenAI, Gemini)

To use Langless with your own key (BYOK), you need to generate an API key at an AI provider — OpenAI or Gemini. The process is similar for both: create an account, enable billing and generate the key. The screens change from time to time, so here we describe the general path, which stays valid even when the layout changes.

What the API key is

The API key is a secret code that authorizes the app to use the AI on your account. It’s usually a long string of letters and numbers. If you want the concept behind it, read what BYOK is and why you pay less.

General step by step

1. Create an account at the provider. For OpenAI, in the platform/developer portal (the keys area is at platform.openai.com/api-keys; if you can’t find it, search for "OpenAI API keys"). For Gemini, in Google AI Studio (aistudio.google.com).
2. Enable billing / a payment method. Most providers require a card to unlock API usage. That’s how you pay for the minutes directly to them.
3. Go to the API keys area. Look for "API keys" or "Credentials" in the account menu.
4. Generate a new key ("Create new secret key"). Give it a name to identify it (e.g., "Langless").
5. Copy and save the key right away. It’s usually shown only once. If you lose it, just generate another.

Plug the key into Langless

1. Open the Langless app and go to the key/provider settings.
2. Choose the provider (OpenAI or Gemini) and paste the key.
3. Done: the key stays in your browser, on your device — the server does not keep it.
