Voice translator for travel: understand and reply on your phone
On a trip, the hard part is usually understanding what people tell you — at check-in, in a taxi, at the pharmacy — somewhere noisy and in a hurry. Langless translates the person’s voice and you hear it in your earbuds, in your language. This guide shows how to do it on your phone, how to reply and how Langless works alongside Google Translate.

Open LanglessUnderstand what people tell you (Push-to-Talk)
- On your phone, open the app and set the country’s language as "Other language".
- In Listen, pick Microphone. The first time, the target button shows the country’s language: tap "🌐 Translates to" until it shows your language. The app remembers the choice.
- Pick the Push-to-Talk style. Hold the button while the person speaks, let go and hear the translation in your earbuds.
Since the microphone only listens while you hold it, the noise between sentences isn’t sent — that’s why Push-to-Talk is the style for noisy places.

Reply: one phone and shared earbuds
To talk both ways with someone on your trip — a guide, a host, someone you spend the day with — each of you takes one earbud:
- Set the other person’s language as "Other language".
- When they speak, set "🌐 Translates to" to your language and hold the button. When it’s your turn, tap "🌐 Translates to" to switch to their language. Either way, hold the button while the person speaks.
- Switch direction only after the previous translation has finished.
There is one output: both of you hear every translation, and switching before it ends cuts off what was still playing. At a counter, replying is simpler with Google Translate’s conversation mode, which shows the sentence on screen.
Langless and Google Translate: they complement each other
For a quick, face-to-face exchange somewhere quiet — asking for directions, showing a sentence on screen — Google Translate’s conversation mode is great and free: use it. See when each helps most in Google Translate and Langless.
The difference: Google Translate works turn by turn (the person speaks, it translates, then you listen); Langless translates in real time, while the person is speaking — like in a movie or a meeting — and you hear it in your earbuds, in your language. It also helps when the place is noisy: Push-to-Talk only sends what you hold. Having both on your phone covers the whole trip.
Before you travel
- Internet: the translation runs in the cloud, so your phone needs data or Wi-Fi.
- Earbuds: required. The microphone stays open a few seconds after you let go of the button; without earbuds, it picks up its own translation.
- AI key: the translation runs on your own AI key. Set it up and test it at home, before you need it.
- No plan yet? You can try it first: see the free trial.
Limits
- Delay: a few seconds between speech and translation.
- Voice: whoever hears you, when you reply, hears the AI’s voice.
- AI cost: the minutes run on your own AI key, which the provider bills based on usage.
- No internet, no translation.
